Corbett’s Chanchal dies from jumbo wounds

A subjugated elephant trained for departmental works in the Kalagarh range of Corbett tiger reserve died from a wound inflicted by another pachyderm. The 51-year-old Chanchal had been wounded by another elephant trained for departmental works on May 21. One of her hind legs had been badly injured in the attack, rendering her unable to walk. She had also sustained deep wounds on other parts of her body, the tiger reserve’s warden Amit Gwasakoti said. The pachyderm was being treated by veterinarians since being injured in the attack. The jumbo died during treatment on Monday afternoon. The autopsy of the elephant was carried out as per the rules, the viscera and samples of internal organs were sent to the Indian Veterinary Research Institute in Bareilly.
