Court sends Gupta brothers to jail for 14 days, bail hearing on Monday

The court of the additional chief judicial magistrate (ACJM) of Dehradun sent Anil Kumar Gupta (51) and Ajay Kumar Gupta (58), also known as the Gupta brothers of South Africa, to jail on judicial custody for 14 days for allegedly abetting the suicide of builder Satendra Singh Sahni. He committed suicide on Friday by jumping off from the eighth floor of an under construction building in the Rajpur Road area of Dehradun. He was taken to the Max Hospital but died during treatment. His son Ranveer Singh Sahni presented a suicide note allegedly written by his father. He claimed that the Gupta brothers had been harassing, threatening and blackmailing him. The officials informed that they had also allegedly threatened to get Sahni and his son-in-law jailed in a false criminal case to destroy their lives, as per the suicide note. Sahni had also registered a complaint against the duo at the police station which was under investigation by the superintendent of police of Dehradun. The officials said that the accused were also allegedly harassing Sahni through Saharanpur police. The police registered an FIR against the accused on the basis of the suicide note and the son’s complaint and started the investigation. They arrested the duo within a few hours of the suicide under section 306 of the Indian Penal Code. The officials said that the police presented the Gupta brothers in court on Saturday. The court sent them to jail for 14 days. The bail hearing of the duo will be held again on Monday, the officials said.
