Covid-19 contagion going out of control in Uttarakhand?

It appears that the dreaded novel Coronavirus (Covid-19) has become out of control in Uttarakhand. The number of new cases of the disease skyrocketed to 4807 on Wednesday while 34 people lost the battle of the life with the disease on the day.  The health system of the state is cracking under the unrelenting onslaught of the disease. All the hospitals in provisional state capital Dehradun which is witnessing an unprecedented surge in the contagion are full to the capacity with the Covid-19 patients. The explosive growth of the contagion could be understood from the fact that in the last seven days more than 18000 new cases of the disease have surfaced in the state. The state now has 134012 cumulative cases of the disease while the death toll has galloped to 1953.

The health department discharged 894 patients from different hospitals of the state following their recovery from the disease on Wednesday.  A total of 104527 patients have recovered from the disease in the state and the recovery percentage has now dropped to 78 percent. The sample positivity rate is 3.91 percent in the state.

In Dehradun a staggering 1876 new patients of the disease were reported on Wednesday. A total of 7682 samples were tested in Dehradun on the day which puts the Infection Rate (IR) at 24.42 percent.  Similarly 818 patients were found in Nainital district which showed an IR of almost 50 percent. In Haridwar district 786 patients surfaced while 602 patients in Udham Singh Nagar, 217 from Pauri, 185 from Tehri, 99 from Almora, 75 from Uttarkashi, 61 from Chamoli, 52 from Rudraprayag, 18 from 10 from Champawat and eight from Bageshwar district were reported on Wednesday

The health department reported deaths of 13 patients from Sushila Tiwari government hospital Haldwani, three each from Mahant Indiresh hospital Dehradun, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Rishikesh, Vivekanand hospital Nainital, Medicity hospital Rudrapur and two from and Himalayan hospital Dehradun on the day. The health department reported death of one patient each from Military Hospital (MH) Roorkee, MH Dehradun, Synergy Dehradun, Kailash hospital Dehradun, Neelkanth hospital Haldwani, Ujala Hospital Kashipur and Metro hospital Haridwar on the day.

The state now has 24893 active patients of the disease. Dehradun continues to be at the top of the table of active cases of the disease with 9164 patients, Haridwar has 6869, Nainital 2820, Udham Singh Nagar 2185, Pauri 1030, Tehri 975, Almora 452, Rudraprayag 308, Champawat 286, Chamoli 254, Uttarkashi 248, Bageshwar 163 and  Pithoragarh 139 active cases of Covid-19.

In the vaccination drive 43216 people were vaccinated in different parts of the state on Wednesday. In the state 286083 people have been fully vaccinated so far as they have received both the first and second dose of the vaccine. The Chief Operations Officer (COO) of state Covid-19 control room, Dr Abhishek Tripathi said that 591 vaccine sessions were organised in different parts of the state on Wednesday.
