With Deepawali to be celebrated in November, the Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA) and the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) will soon conduct inspections of cracker manufacturing units across the State to check child labour.
The BBA state coordinator Suresh Uniyal claimed that the cases of child labour in the State are increasing at an alarming rate. “We will soon organise surprise inspections at cracker manufacturing units to rescue children working in such places. If children are found working in any such unit, we will initiate strict action against those responsible. Parents are the primary instigators of child labour as they often compel their children to work in order to generate income,”, he added.
Uniyal said that manufacturing companies also engage children as cheap labour, which is an exploitative practice. In order to combat child labour, the BBA carries out regular inspections in collaboration with the district task force. He further emphasised that the SCPCR must promptly notify and conduct inspections to prevent cases of child labour in the State.
SCPCR member Vinod Kaparwan said that the child labour has been increasing in Uttarakhand He said that manufacturing companies also hire children as labourers. The commission ensures implementation of stringent measures against child labour. In addition to this, the SCPCR in association with linear departments has also organised many awareness programmes addressing the issue of child labour. Poverty and limited access to education have been identified as the primary catalysts for the surge in child labour within the State, he added.
Kaparwan further added that ahead of Deepawali, the commission will also conduct inspections at cracker manufacturing units to address concerns regarding child labour.
