Cross country bicycling event should be held annually, says Maharaj
The city’s first cross country bicycle rally- Race One Feet Apart- was organised by Uttarakhand Bicycle Hub with the support of Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board here on Saturday. Speaking at the conclusion of the rally, the State’s Tourism and Culture minister Satpal Maharaj said that the State government and Tourism department will continue to encourage such adventure sports activities. Stating that the state government wishes that adventure sports pick up more in the future, the minister said that the cross country bicycle rally should be organised as an annual event.
The minister also presented medals, cash award and certificates to the winners on the occasion. In both the men’s and women’s categories, the first, second and third position winners were presented with Rs 5,000, Rs 2,000 and Rs 1,000 cash awards respectively along with medals and certificates. In the men’s category, Akshit Joshi took 45 minutes and 12 seconds to complete the course and secure first position. Avnish Rana came second completing the race in 45 minutes and 32 seconds while Arjun Rathore came in third completing the course in 46 minutes and 15 seconds. In the women’s category, Vandana came first while Anjali came second. A total of 26 cyclists participated in the cross country rally which was flagged off in the morning by Maharaj’s daughter in-law and actor Mohina Rawat.
The 18.5 kilometre course of the rally comprised technical section, jump and off road section. According to the event organisers the aim of the rally was to promote a fit India. After being flagged off from near Muse Art café, the participants cycled via IT Park off road, Canal Road, Rajpur Road, Inder Baba Marg, Old Mussoorie Road trail to return back to the starting point. The UTDB deputy director Yogendra Singh Gangwar and Aditya Saxena of Uttarakhand Bicycle Hub among others were also present on the occasion.
