PN | DEHRADUN

Taking a stern note of the slow process of providing Employee State Insurance (ESI) coverage to contractual and other workers in the State, the chief secretary Radha Raturi has sought an action taken report from the secretary Urban development on ESI coverage of workers in municipal corporations and bodies.

She gave the orders while chairing a meeting with the senior officers of the State administration at the secretariat on Monday. In the meeting she said that all the ULBs should be reviewed and immediate action should be taken to compulsorily cover the daily/contractual workers and labourers working in them under the ESI.

Pertinently after the strict instructions of CS, the Labour department conducted surprise inspections in relation to ESI and notices have been issued to more than 15,000 units so far in the State. Following which a total of 10,000 units have so far completed the process of ESI coverage.

In the meeting the CS said that the workers should be made aware about the benefits of the insurance scheme and their rights.

She directed the Rural Development, Youth Welfare, Disaster Management, Finance, Women Empowerment and Child Development departments and NGOs to prepare an action plan to provide ESI coverage to all the workers.  The number of insurance holders under the scheme is  7,34,343 while the number of their dependents is about thirty lakh in the State.
