The international chairperson of the Vishwa Dalit Parishad (VDP) Bhupendra Pal Singh Chamar has demanded that strict action should be taken against Ashutosh Negi. In a letter written to the director general of Uttarakhand Police Abhinav Kumar, the VDP chairman has said that exemplary punishment should be given to Negi who was recently arrested in a case involving atrocity on a Dalit person. He said Negi along with some of his supporters were arrested for humiliation, use of abusive language and physical manhalding with a social worker of the Dalit community Raja Koli.

In the letter he said that the police should ensure that exemplary punishment is given to Negi and his supporters. He said that the Pushkar Singh Dhami government has always protected the interests of Dalits and their respect has increased under his government. However there are elements which harbour malice against the dalit community and commit atrocities on them.He said that the faith of Dalits will get shattered if the accused are able to get bail. The VDP chairman threatened that the Dalits will be forced to start an agitation if the culprits are not punished.

The assertion of the Dalit community in the case involving journalist and social worker Ashutosh Negi assumes significance since the opposition Congress is linking his arrest with the support he provides to the parents of Ankita Bhandari and his role in exposing the alleged role of a VIP in the case. The Congress leaders are taking part in the Dharna and are staging protests on the issue.
