DAV college students to stage protest on September 5

DAV PG College students will stage a protest on September 5 against the failure of the authorities to meet their demands. The president of the college student union Siddharth Aggarwal said that despite persistent requests over the past six to seven months, the college management has not acted on their demands. They have undertaken initiatives such as signature campaigns and protest sessions lasting two to three hours to draw attention to their demands. A letter outlining their demands was submitted to the college principal SK Singh, during the recent protest. However, their demands have been disregarded, prompting them to schedule a protest starting on September 5. He added that the protest will continue till the college management provides a written assurance that their demands will be met within a specified timeframe.

Commenting about the demands, Aggarwal added that they aim to address the issue of vacant positions of teaching faculty and other staff, which directly impact the students’ education. Out of the 185 teaching staff positions, only 132 have been filled, and out of the 56 and 94 positions available for third and fourth-class staff respectively, only 27 and 47 have been filled respectively. He also added that the students are demanding the installation of a 100-foot national flagpole, an announcement made by cabinet minister Ganesh Joshi in 2023 which has not been fulfilled so far. They also seek improvements to the college’s classes and infrastructure, he said. The student union leader further said that the protest will continue day and night till the college authorities ensure steps in order to meet their demands.

Notably, previously the Dean of student welfare at the college Gopal Chettri has recognised the insufficient number of teachers and staff, leading to a decline in the quality of education. He informed that the college management has notified the appropriate authorities regarding this matter and expects that the vacant positions will be filled in the near future.
