Death toll in Wayanad landslides mounts to over 150

The casualties in the devastating serial landslides in Kerala’s Wayanad district keeps steadily surging with recovery of bodies by the rescuers. The toll is now stated to be standing in the neighbourhood of 150 and it may further rise. Over 200 people are being treated in hospitals while over 180 people are still missing.
As per the district administration, more than 300 houses were flattened in Mundakkai and Chooralmala areas of the district as rocks and water came crashing down on them, burying them in enormous piles of debris.
Rescue teams comprising the Army, Navy and NDRF are jointly looking for survivors from beneath the debris and breaking into the remains of the houses either destroyed or covered up with mud. As per a Defence statement, around 1,000 people have been rescued from the affected areas. Besides, the Air Force is carrying out aerial reconnaissance of the affected areas to bolster search and rescue operations.
