In latest news from Uttarakhand, as per the detailed project report (DPR) prepared by a Swiss company to remove the landslide-accumulated debris in the under-construction Silkyara tunnel on Yamunotri national highway , the work will cost around Rs 20 crore. Officials said that the debris clearing work is likely to start in the next three/ four days. To recall, 41 labourers were trapped inside the tunnel following a landslide on November 12 last year and remained there for 17 days.
Following this accident, the work on the tunnel being built as part of the all-weather Char Dham road project has remained suspended for two and half months. On January 23, the Central government granted permission to NHIDCL-the nodal agency of the project- to restart the work. After the construction work started from Barkot, it could not progress due to the accumulated landslide debris at the Silkyara end of the tunnel.
A few days back, the water accumulated in the tunnel was drained out after which the challenge is to remove the landslide debris. The Hyderabad-based construction company Navyuga Engineering Company Ltd-entrusted with the task- has started preparations for the debris clearing work. It will work in technical collaboration with the Swiss company.
