The Maldevta Road was swamped by debris following heavy rain on Wednesday night. According to the locals, the debris from road works uphill under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana ( PMGSY) were dumped improperly and were carried by the rainwater to the road. The debris along with rainwater entered several buildings damaging the properties besides damaging crops and the road.
On Thursday, the additional district magistrate, Girish Chandra arrived for the inspection of the affected area. He disclosed that it appears as if the improper dumping of debris from the PMGSY work is responsible for this incident. In view of this, the district magistrate Ashish Kumar Srivastava has directed the executive engineer of PMGSY to present clarification on this matter. Further, he also formed a four-member team to investigate the matter so that such incidents can be avoided in the future. Besides the ADM who will lead the team, a sub-divisional magistrate, an executive engineer from Rishikesh and a geologist would also be part of this team.
The DM has directed the ADM to submit the report to him after a thorough investigation. Meanwhile, cabinet minister Ganesh Joshi and Raipur MLA Umesh Sharma ‘Kau’ also reached the affected area on Thursday morning. The locals said that they had repeatedly told those executing the road construction to dump the debris properly but this was not done. By about 11 AM mechanical excavators were brought to clear the debris from the roads.
