Decks clear for Jamrani Dam project on Gaula river

The screening committee of the Jal Shakti ministry in its meeting on Tuesday has given its approval for the proposal to include the ambitious Jamrani dam project of Uttarakhand under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana. A proposal for allocation of budget for the project would be forwarded by the Jal Shakti ministry to the union finance ministry, government of India. The Irrigation secretary HC Semwal said that on June 10 this year an investment clearance of Rs 2,584 crore under PMKSY was given. The clearance was given on a 90:10 (Centre: State) basis.
It is pertinent to mention here that the Jamrani dam is proposed to be built 10 kilometres upstream on the Gaula river from Kathgodam in Nainital district. The 150.6 metre dam is aimed at generating 63 million units of electricity and an additional irrigation facility would be available for 57,065 hectares of land from it. The project would also provide 42 MCM of drinking water to the Haldwani city till the year 2055. The government has set a target to complete the project by the year 2027.
