The Dehradun district magistrate Sonika directed all municipal bodies on Monday to conduct regular raids to seize banned single-use plastic items and take strict action against violators. She also instructed them to speed up the process of identifying new places to carry out garbage disposal and segregation processes under municipal bodies.
Sonika took a review meeting with senior officials of municipal corporations, municipal councils, and sector magistrates regarding the ban on single-use plastic and garbage disposal in the district. She directed the municipal officials and respective sub-divisional magistrates (SDMs) to take action on the use, storage, and transportation of single-use plastic across the district. She said that single-use plastic items are still being used widely across the district despite being banned by the State Government. She directed the nominated nodal officers in the municipal bodies to take effective measures to ensure proper waste disposal and prohibit the usage of banned plastic products as per the recent direction of the high court.
She also directed officials to conduct raids across the district against banned plastic items while raising awareness among locals. She directed them to take immediate action against sanitation-related complaints too as per high court orders. Meanwhile, the DM also ordered the officials to mark illegal encroachments on the Rispana river and demolish them after some people complained of increasing illegal encroachments in the river and drains at the DM office on Monday.
