Monday, 16 SEPTEMBER 2024 | PNS | DEHRADUN

A women’s safety assistance centre will be established at CNI Chowk to ensure the safety of women visiting the Paltan Bazaar area in Dehradun. Female police officers will also be stationed at the centre from the opening until the closing of the market. The Dehradun district magistrate Savin Bansal and senior superintendent of police conducted an on-ground inspection of the Dehradun city’s traffic management on Sunday. They toured the main roads on a motorcycle along with other officials, visiting areas like Ghantaghar, Kishan Nagar Chowk, Ballupur Chowk and Balliwala to assess traffic congestion. During the inspection, the officials discussed the causes of traffic pressure and explored potential measures to alleviate it.

The DM also instructed officials to identify and mark parking spaces along the major routes and ensure that vehicles are parked in these designated areas. Additional directions were given to prevent any temporary encroachments on the city’s main roads, ensuring smooth traffic flow. Bansal and Singh also made a surprise visit to Paltan Bazaar to review women’s safety measures.

They interacted with women in the market to gather their feedback on security concerns. Based on their observations and the feedback, the authorities identified sensitive areas within the market that required additional surveillance. They directed the installation of more CCTV cameras to enhance safety for women visiting the bazaar. They also announced the establishment of a women’s safety assistance centre at CNI Chowk, which will operate during market hours with female police officers and Gaura Cheetah personnel for regular patrolling.

The SSP said that this initiative is part of a broader effort to make public spaces in Dehradun safer for women, with regular patrols and security measures to prevent any unfortunate incidents. Besides this, the DM said that he also inspected areas where poor drainage systems have been causing waterlogging. They also discussed locations that need to be designated as Chowks to facilitate necessary improvements and better management.
