Dehradun hosts U’khand’s first collaborative forum for sustainable development

The Dehradun district administration hosted the first collaborative forum of the State to bring social organisations and intellectuals from various fields together to discuss about several crucial issues of the district. The event focused on nine key areas, including water conservation, eco-tourism, agriculture, employment, women’s welfare, traffic management and preservation of local art and culture.
The even called District Forum of Doon, for Doon workshop was organised at IRDT auditorium. The workshop was inaugurated by Garhwal commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey, Padma Shri awardees Kalyan Singh Rawat and Premchand Sharma and the DM among others. Pandey lauded the initiative, suggesting that the forum should be registered under the Society Act as a permanent district advisory forum to enable long-term impact.
He emphasised the importance of such dialogues in integrating local culture, geography and scientific approaches into developmental strategies. Bansal also highlighted the forum’s goal of leveraging collective expertise to implement effective schemes benefiting the district’s last-mile citizens. Participants, including social workers and experts, also shared ideas to refine local governance and improve public welfare projects.
The Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh also addressed traffic management, urging parents to ensure road safety by monitoring minors and promoting helmet use among students. He shared that the number of vehicles has increased from 4,500 in year 2000 to nine lakh at present, stressing the need for collective action to manage limited resources. Bansal said that the forum marks a collaborative approach to addressing Dehradun’s pressing challenges, aiming to translate innovative ideas into actionable solutions.
