Devotees throng city temples on first Somwar of Sawan

Many devotees in Dehradun throng the city’s temples to offer prayers on the first Sonwar of auspicious month of Sawan, which commenced on Monday. Devotees believe that offering water to the Shivling and fasting on Mondays during the month of Sawan brings merit. The famous Tapkeshwar temple in Dehradun saw a large number of devotees coming to offer prayers to Lord Shiva.
A devotee Sunita Negi said that this month is considered especially auspicious by Hindus. She said that she fasts every Monday during this month and offers flowers, milk, water and Bel Patra as part of her prayers to Lord Shiva.
Another devotee Vishnu Bhandari said that he visited the temple on the first Monday of Sawan barefoot. He also observed a fast for the well-being of his family. He said that he distributed Kheer Prasad on Monday at the temple to the devotees who had come to pray to Lord Shiva.
A priest Suraj Dimri told this correspondent that the devotees, mostly women and unmarried girls, bring offerings including fruits, flowers and milk to Lord Shiva. He said that devotees started thronging temples early in the morning to offer their prayers to Shiva.
