PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/ Nainital

The Health department has swung into action after the High Court took a serious view of the district hospitals becoming referral centres and the poor health services in the mountainous areas of Uttarakhand. To see for herself the state of things, the director general of Health, Sunita Tamta herself inspected the arrangements at the Government BD Pandey District Hospital in Nainital. She saw for herself why the CT scan had remained closed for a week and the oxygen plant for a long time. She assured that things would improve in a week.

Further, she accepted 50 per cent specialist doctor shortage in the State and assured that this shortage would be overcome in the next 5 years.  “We have increased the retirement age of specialist doctors from 60 to 65 years. Besides, 34 specialist doctors have been appointed till now under NHM and this process is going on further. This aside, we have made alternative arrangements by hiring 35 specialist doctors under UCOD,” she added.
