Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami achieved a unique feat on Thursday when he created a record of being the longest serving CM of the State. He broke the record of Congress stalwart Narayan Dutt Tiwari who served as the CM of the State for a period of five years and five days.
On July 4, 2026, Dhami had completed five years in office.
Dhami first assumed the charge of the CM of the State on July 4, 2021 when the high command of BJP asked his predecessor Teerath Singh Rawat to step down. He led the BJP in the Vidhan Sabha elections of 2022 in which the BJP broke the pattern of power changing hands every five years in Uttarakhand. In the elections, Dhami was defeated by Bhuwan Kapdi of Congress in Khatima assembly constituency. Despite his defeat the BJP high command decided to reappoint him as the CM of the State and on March 23, he took oath as CM for a second consecutive term.
Pertinently, Uttarakhand is considered to be a politically sensitive state as it has seen 10 CMs after its creation in November 2000.
Notably, Nityanand Swami became the first CM of the State on November 11, 2000. On October 29, 2001 he was replaced by Bhagat Singh Koshyari who served till March 1, 2002. After the first assembly elections, the Congress came to the power Narayan Dutt Tiwari became the CM of the State and served in the position for a tenure of five years.
On March 7, 2007, Major general ( retd) Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri assumed the charge of CM of the State. After a political turmoil in the party, the BJP replaced him with Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank on June 27, 2009. Ahead of the Vidhan Sabha elections, Khanduri was reappointed as the CM for a second term on September 11, 2011. He was succeeded by Vijay Bahuguna ( March 3, 2012 to January 31, 2014) and Harish Rawat ( February 1, 2014 – March 18, 2017). On March 18, 2017 Trivendra Singh Rawat assumed the charge of the CM and following his replacement, Teerath Singh Rawat became CM on March 10, 2021.
