Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami virtually laid the foundation for the Champawat regional science centre to be constructed at a cost of Rs 55.35 crore on Friday.

Speaking on the occasion, Dhami said that the science centre will prove to be a milestone in the development of Champawat as a model district. He said that the government is making consistent efforts so that Uttarakhand excels in science and technology. Programmes aimed at facilitating this are organised regularly through the Uttarakhand State Council of Science and Technology (UCOST) which is the nodal agency in the State for science, technology and innovation. “Science is the basis of development and also helps in solving problems in a sensitive manner. The regional science centre in Almora will be the third after the centres in Dehradun and Almora while the nation’s fifth science city is coming up in Dehradun. The qualitative effect of the science centre in Champawat will be visible to all in the near future,” Dhami said.

He said that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the nation is setting new dimensions in development through science and technology. The pace of development of the nation and State will pick up only through a scientific temperament and innovation. In such a scenario, the science centres will play a vital role in ensuring the participation of the general public in the national level ambitious projects, the CM said.

He further said that UCOST is working to establish Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) labs in all the 95 development blocks of the State. In the first phase, the council has established STEM labs in the blocks of border districts and Dehradun which is also important for achieving the aims of the National Education Policy 2020. Dhami informed that in the budget session of the Assembly, budget had been allocated for establishing science centres in all the districts.

MP Ajay Tamta said that the establishment of the science centre in Champawat will boost the mental development of children in the region. The centre will include a modern interactive gallery, an interactive and participatory gallery on fun science, an immersive display on astronomy, science park and other aspects.

UCOST director general Durgesh Pant, principal secretary RK Sudhanshu and others were also present on the occasion.
