A 48-hour protest was started in the Tehsil compound on Monday by the Joshimath Sangharsh Samiti (JSS) with locals demanding complete rehabilitation of the disaster affected people while alleging that no action had been taken yet on the points of agreement reached with the State government. The JSS expressed disappointment at proper action not being taken on the 11-point agreement with the government about three years after land subsidence hit Jyotirmath.

In a memorandum submitted to the authorities, the committee alleged major irregularities in the works started after Rs 1,640 crore was approved for stabilisation work by the Centre. Protesting against the demolition of 55 affected buildings in the city, the committee alleged that instead of a scientific engineering approach, the authorities are working to ruin the disaster-affected families.

The committee coordinator Atul Sati said that the homes of the disaster affected families should not be demolished until they are provided alternative accommodation. He also raised demands including compensation for the land and ancestral homes of the affected families. The protesters warned of intensifying the protest if their demands are not met.
