District Hospital admits the destitute elderly following criticism

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

Following the criticism received from different quarters, the Deen Dayal Upadhyay District Hospital has started treating the elderly destitute man who had waited more than 24 hours outside the hospital road. The hospital administration admitted the patient on Saturday, a day after The Pioneer had published a report detailing the plight of the patient who had been refused treatment at the hospital on Thursday. Hoping for medical care, the poor man, who seemed to have mobility and speech difficulty, had spent a day and night lying on the road outside the hospital’s emergency ward.

The apathetic inhumanness on the part of the hospital administration raised serious concerns about emergency care services at the district hospital. Queried over the alleged indifference, the principal medical superintendent (PMS) of the hospital, Dr Manu Jain told The Pioneer that no such patient had arrived in the emergency ward.  However, when The Pioneer had drawn the attention of the Health minister, Subodh Uniyal to the insensitivity shown to the elderly poor man needing compassion and care, he acknowledged the issue and assured that the matter would be examined.
Subsequently, the patient was admitted to the hospital.

Informing this, the hospital PMS said that the elderly patient whose name was Shiv Kumar had been admitted to the hospital on Saturday. He informed that the patient had been currently receiving treatment in the emergency ward. “Kumar will receive treatment here till he recovers,” he assured.

According to the hospital officials, Kumar has been suffering from a persistent cough and severe weakness, which has made him unable to walk.
