The Dehradun municipal commissioner, Manuj Goyal issued an order to divert water from narrow drains into other channels to prevent waterlogging which has become a major issue in the city this monsoon. He inspected several affected areas amid rains on Wednesday including Buddha Chowk, Darshan Lal Chowk, Doon Hospital, Parade Ground, Kanak Chowk and Rajpur to take stock of the situation. He also called the officials concerned of the public works department, irrigation department and Dehradun Smart City Limited (DSCL) on the spot and directed them to divert the water from narrow drains to avoid accumulation of overflowing water on roads.
On observing severe waterlogging in the Kacheri Road, he directed them to divert the water in drains from the Rangers Ground area to other channels as per their respective capacities rather than diverting it to drains in Court Road to prevent waterlogging. The commissioner also observed slabs scattered at the construction sites by PWD in Kanak Chowk that were disrupting the flow of water. He expressed his disappointment towards such negligence of the department and directed them to keep construction materials in sites in a way that does not lead to waterlogging. He also directed the officials concerned to clean the drains of affected areas. He directed them to figure out the cause of waterlogging in affected places and take measures as per disaster management to minimise the risk.
The commissioner said that the municipal corporation has also formed eight quick response teams that are working 24 hours to address the issues like waterlogging and other associated concerns. All issues are being addressed immediately after getting complaints from locals, added the commissioner.
