The Doon Library and Research Centre (DLRC) plabs to approach the Raja Ram Mohan Roy (RRMR) library to provid books for their newly established children’s reading section. This section was recently established to improve the library and offer more resources to the residents of Dehradun. Describing the children’s reading section, the librarian at DLRC JB Goyal stated that the section was recently launched in the library. Currently, eight students have enrolled for the membership. He informed that the annual membership fee for children to join the section is Rs 100, along with a refundable security Rs 500.He further informed that the section offers various types of books for children, including general knowledge books, novels, special children’s newspapers, history books, environmental books, fiction stories and many others. Goyal added that approximately 300 books are donated by the public, while some are purchased. He added that a total of 600 books are currently available for the children, which he considers to be insufficient. Consequently, they plan to request additional books from the RRMR library for the children’s section.
Goyal also informed that to improve children’s skills, the library administration hosts activity programmes for children on Fridays and Saturdays. These activities involve drawing, quizzes, storytelling sessions and the distribution of prizes to motivate and engage the children. He outlined that the primary goal of establishing a children’s reading section at the library is to enhance children’s reading abilities by providing a dedicated space for them.
It can be recalled that earlier the library was only for teenagers, young adults and senior citizens. However, in order to enhance the library DLRC has earlier decided to open a children’s reading section for kids between the ages of seven and 15.
