DM acts against Sahaspur BEO for neglecting children’s safety

On the orders of Dehradun district magistrate Savin Bansal, the chief education officer issued a special adverse entry for the year 2024-25 for Sahaspur block education officer (BEO) on Thursday following gross negligence in ensuring the safety of children and reportedly attempting to conceal a critical incident. Bansal informed that the incident occurred on December 5 in a school of Eidgah Basti, Sahaspur, where three schoolgirls sustained injuries after plaster from the roof of the school fell on them.
Despite the severity, the BEO reportedly failed to inform higher authorities in a timely manner and delayed conducting an on-site inspection. The headmistress of the school had repeatedly reported the dilapidated condition of the school building, yet no measures were taken to relocate the school to a safer premise. Even after the incident, it took four days for the BEO to issue relocation orders, raising concerns about the lack of prompt action, as per the DM. Bansal deemed the BEO guilty of dereliction of duty and ordered the special adverse entry for the year. This must serve as a stern reminder for officials to prioritise the safety of children and uphold their responsibilities diligently, the DM said.
