The Bageshwar district magistrate Anuradha Paul was seen planting paddy with the women of the Bilona village to the accompaniment of the traditional folk song known as Hudkiya Baul. The women looked elated with having the DM with them during the time of paddy planting. Notably, planting paddy seeds with the singing of the folk song known as Hudkiya Baul is a tradition in this part of the State that has been enduring through ages.
The DM said that Uttarakhand has a rich tradition of folk songs and Hudkiya Baul is a prominent one among these. “This tradition related to collective labour in the realm of agriculture should be preserved. These folk songs reflect the reality of life, the essence of life. I have been here to ensure that everyone, particularly those from the younger generation, should be resolved to preserve this ancient heritage,” she said, adding that this was a novel experience for her which she enjoyed a lot.
She further said that the artists who play the Hudka instrument should be encouraged, too.
