The Dehradun district magistrate Sonika found 51 officials and employees of the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) absent from their desks during her surprise inspection on Wednesday. The DM directed the municipal commissioner Gaurav Kumar to mark the absence of all the absentees. She also ordered that the officials and employees must provide proper information about their whereabouts and what they do throughout the day rather than just vaguely mentioning field visits in the office. The DM also summoned the list of works done for source segregation and the file of MoUs and contracts signed with the agencies concerned.

Besides this, the DM also found some financial irregularities in issuing funds to an agency. The corporation was allegedly issuing an agency about Rs eight lakh every month for raising awareness and providing training to people regarding segregation and related issues under a central government programme. The agency reportedly received the said amount for the past six months but its work is not being properly monitored by MCD. The officials could not present any proof that showed how the agency’s work made any difference to the sanitation conditions in the city. She has sought a report from the officials regarding the issue.

The DM also attached two senior officials to the additional municipal commissioner’s office who failed to handle work related to the mutation of properties causing issues to the public. Sonika also found irregularities in the door to door garbage collecting work of the corporation. She directed the officials to ensure ward-wise monitoring of garbage pickup every day and allocate roster-wise areas to vehicles for sanitation related works. She also instructed them to conduct a survey of the areas where garbage is being thrown at public places to find out the reason and make necessary arrangements accordingly. Besides this, the DM also asked the officials to set a target of planting one lakh trees in the city while ensuring they grow with proper care. She directed them to submit the list of approved and proposed parks in the city for plantation.
