The Dehradun district magistrate Savin Bansal imposed a fine of Rs 1.8 lakh on waste management companies for their failure to comply with operational guidelines in garbage collection work in areas under the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD). Bansal conducted a surprise inspection of waste management companies in Dehradun on Friday and expressed serious dissatisfaction with their performance.

Arriving at the garbage collection points and workshop of Econ and Water Grace companies at 6 AM, he found 14 garbage collecting vehicles parked and inactive. A further inspection at the IT Park revealed 18 vehicles also idling, with eight identified as breakdowns. The DM expressed his disappointment at the lack of timely movement of vehicles to designated wards and imposed a fine of Rs 60,000 on the two companies for their negligence in waste collection operations.

Bansal also evaluated several garbage points throughout the city, discovering significant litter at the Bhagat Singh Colony. He was particularly irked by the performance of Sunlight Company, which failed to adequately manage waste collection, leading to an additional fine of Rs 25,000. Moreover, the DM visited the Kargi Garbage Transfer Centre, where he observed a considerable accumulation of waste and poor sanitation practices. He imposed a fine of Rs 75,000 on all three companies for not adhering to proper waste transfer protocols. Bansal said that the penalties imposed on these companies will be deducted from the companies’ monthly payments by MCD.

He emphasised on the urgency for improvement in waste management services across Dehradun and said that strict action will be taken against those who fail to comply with rules.
