DM orders effective steps to curb road accidents, seeks proposals within a week

Stating that every life is precious, Dehradun district magistrate Savin Bansal has directed the departments concerned to take concrete steps to prevent road accidents in the district. Chairing a meeting of the district-level road safety committee along with senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh on Saturday, the DM directed the departments concerned to identify factors responsible for road accidents and prepare action plans on a war footing to address these issues. Directing the Public Works Department to prepare a work plan for three-dimensional marking speed breakers at vulnerable spots within a week, while also approving Rs 30 lakh on the spot for this task. Further, budget was approved from the untied fund for a three-year annual maintenance contract for some CCTV cameras of the police which are not functioning properly. The Traffic Police superintendent has been directed to submit a proposal for this. The district administration has also made preparations for installation of 14 new traffic lights under the zero investment model, for which the tender process has been undertaken. Bansal also directed the regional transport office to not delay on works like zebra crossings and stoppage signs, sought proposals and approved the necessary funds. Regarding the road accident which resulted in six deaths on November 11 at ONGC Chowk in the city, the DM directed the Dehradun Smart City Limited (DSCL) to submit an inquiry report within a week on why the CCTV cameras were not recording in the area at the time of the accident. He also directed that the impaired Smart City CCTV cameras should be repaired within 10 days and a report should be submitted on the same. He also directed officials to link CCTV cameras in the city areas of the district with the Smart City integrated command and control centre. The PWD officials were directed to install high mast lights at Asharodi. It will be recalled that one person had died and three had been injured in a multiple vehicle collision recently at the Asharodi checkpost on the outskirts of the city. Apart from this, the Police department was directed to link the speed monitor cameras with the Smart City’s integrated command and control centre. The DM also directed officials of DSCL and other departments concerned to work in coordination to link the CCTV cameras to the Smart City’s integrated command and control centre, adding that funds will be provided for this task.
