The Dehradun district magistrate Sonika ordered the officials to conduct inspections of coaching centres and buildings with basements to ensure prohibited activities are not being conducted there. She said that the officials will ensure during the inspection that all establishments are adhering to building bylaws and safety regulations. Sonika instructed officials from MDDA, Police, municipal bodies and other departments concerned to coordinate and ensure that all coaching centres and buildings meet the required standards. She directed the additional district magistrate (Administration) Jai Bharat to monitor the entire process in the district. Sonika asked the officials to ensure that no untoward incidents should occur in these establishments in case of heavy rainfall. She called for detailed inspections and reports on the registration status, safety compliance, building construction standards, fire exit arrangements and the adequacy of entry and exit points in coaching centres and other establishments. DM also directed the city magistrate and all sub divisional magistrates to inspect the coaching centres in their respective areas and submit detailed reports based on the State government’s guidelines. The DM conducted the meeting after the State government ordered all DMs to conduct inspections of coaching centres and buildings with basement activities. This order was in response to the tragic death of three IAS aspirants due to flooding in a Delhi coaching institute last month after which the State government formed a six member committee in each district for safety audit of all coaching centres under the chairmanship of the DMs.
