In the wake of heat wave-like conditions prevailing in the city and elsewhere in the State, doctors have advised people to increase their water intake to avoid dehydration. The doctors claimed that as the temperature rises, people, especially the elderly and children should be cautious of the heat and avoid going outside as much as possible. Lemon water, ORS and other fluids can save people from dehydration in the summer, the doctors said.

Talking to The Pioneer, senior physician at the district hospital Dr Praveen Panwar said that as soon as the temperature rises to cause a heat wave,it can result in dehydration among people. Dehydration can lead to headaches, vomiting, dryness in the mouth, loss of consciousness and other symptoms. The elderly and children are more prone to dehydration during this season so they are advised to avoid wearing heavy clothes. In addition, people should increase their water intake in the form of lemon water, coconut water and other ways to stay hydrated, he said.

He further emphasised that people should wear sunglasses and hats outdoors to avoid direct exposure to sun rays that can affect the human body adversely.

“Dehydration is a common health issue that occurs when the temperature rises, especially during summer. It is important to take necessary precautions to prevent this, especially for children whose immunity levels are lower than other age groups,” physician at Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) Hospital Dr Naresh said.

He further said that considering the rising temperatures, people of any age group, especially children, can suffer from dehydration, nausea and water-borne diseases. To stay healthy and hydrated during the summer season, people are advised to increase their water intake and consume fresh fruits. One should also consume lemon water and coconut water along with fruits and vegetable salad to stay hydrated. Naresh also emphasised that children should avoid going outside, especially during the afternoon, where there are higher chances of dehydration.
