Doctors recommend precautions while wearing lenses

Unnecessary and improper use of coloured or contact lenses can lead to corneal damage and various other eye conditions, doctors here said.  They said this following a recent report highlighting a celebrity who experienced corneal damage while wearing a lens during work. Considering this, city doctors here have advised individuals to wear contact lenses only after confirming on the proper precautions and care.

Senior eye specialist at the Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) hospital, Dr Sushil Ojha said that many individuals opt to wear coloured and contact lenses for aesthetic reasons. He emphasised that while wearing lenses is not inherently harmful to the eyes, improper usage can pose risks. Ojha differentiated between cosmetic coloured lenses, used to temporarily change eye color and contact lenses tailored to correct vision. He added that incorrect usage or lack of precautions may result in corneal damage, blurred vision, burning sensations, allergies and other complications. He stressed the importance of taking necessary precautions when wearing lenses, such as handling them with clean hands, avoiding dusty environments, using the proper solution for cleaning and storing them in solution when not in use. Additionally, he advised sports players to refrain from wearing contact lenses while engaging in sports activities

Eye specialist Dr Amit Singh emphasised the importance of educating individuals on properly caring for their lenses while wearing them. He noted instances where beauticians in parlours have adorned brides with lenses without proper guidance from eye doctors. Singh highlighted the necessity for individuals wearing lenses to seek advice from professionals regarding lens care and precautions to prevent corneal damage and potential blindness. He stressed the importance of wearing lenses for minimal hours, taking breaks and adhering to the prescribed timeline. Further, he advised against wearing lenses for extended periods. Singh also recommended that individuals refrain from wearing contact lenses while sleeping and advised wearing sunglasses over the lenses when outside, especially in windy conditions. He also emphasised the importance of consulting an eye specialist before choosing any type of lenses, whether they are coloured or contact lenses.
