Doiwala municipality imposes Rs one lakh fine on salesman of single-use plastic products

Friday, 18 November 2022 | PNS | DEHRADUN

The Doiwala municipality imposed a fine of Rs one lakh on a salesman for selling banned single-use plastic products on Thursday. The Dehradun district magistrate Sonika has been receiving complaints regarding usage of single-use plastic across the district despite the items being banned by the State government. The Garhwal commissioner Sushil Kumar had also directed all district magistrates last month to take effective measures to ensure proper waste disposal and prohibit usage of the banned plastic products.

Subsequently, the DM recently issued an order to all municipal bodies in Dehradun district to take effective action on the use, storage and transportation of single-use plastic across the district. She has also nominated nodal officers in the municipal bodies as per the directions of Garhwal commissioner. The officials informed that the sanitation team of the Doiwala municipality conducted a special campaign against the use of single-use plastic products on Thursday.

During the checking, the team recovered seven boxes of banned disposable plastic cups and one box of plastic cutlery along with other banned plastic products from a salesman in Doiwala area. The officials informed that the municipality seized all the products and imposed a hefty fine of Rs one lakh as per the rules. The DM has appreciated the move and asked all municipal bodies including the municipal corporations of Dehradun and Rishikesh to take action against single-use plastic and conduct public awareness campaigns.

It is worth mentioning here that despite the ban on the use of single-use plastic across the State, the use of the banned items has continued unabated in various parts of Uttarakhand.
