Several shops in the Doiwala area remained closed for about three hours on Monday in support of Rishikesh MLA Prem Chand Aggarwal. However, the shutdown had no effect in Dehradun and Rishikesh as most of the shops remained open. Aggarwal resigned as a cabinet minister on Sunday. His resignation elicited mixed response from people from across the State. While some people expressed satisfaction, his supporters called for a market shutdown on Monday.
Though the impact of this call was limited, shops in Doiwala remained closed for about three hours, except for essential supply stores. Aggarwal’s supporters also staged a sit-in protest at Doiwala Chowk. They claimed that regional politics was influencing the situation and that the recent developments were not beneficial for Uttarakhand. They also alleged that Aggarwal resigned under pressure and demanded that his resignation be revoked.Aggarwal himself arrived at Doiwala around afternoon and urged shopkeepers to reopen after which traders resumed business.
