The principal of the Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) Dr Geeta Jain underscored the importance of eye donation while addressing an eye donation fortnight programme held on Wednesday. She said that donating one eye can potentially restore sight in two people.
Urging the people to go for eye donation after death, the medical superintendent of the State-run facility Dr Anurag Aggarwal said that one could realise the importance of eyes if he kept his eyes closed for just ten minutes. “This exemplifies the misery of blind people. This is why the eye donation campaign should gain momentum in this State. There can be no greater charitable act than this,” he said.
The head of the Ophthalmology departmentDr Shanti Pandey also urged the people to come forward with eye donation pledges.
Moreover, a senior eye specialist Dr Sushil Ojha said that the backlog of corneal transplants is growing annually due to people’s indifference and lack of awareness. “Even though 20,000 transplants are performed in a year, the demand is for two lakhs. This is what is leading to the rising number of blind people in the country,” he added.
The students presented a play on eye donation besides preparing appropriate posters for the occasion.
