Doon DM ropes in Municipal Corporation and different departments in the initiative
Considering winters and biting cold affecting poor people, homeless or those living in shelter homes to survive a cold night, the Dehradun district administration has taken an initiative to collect warm clothing from local residents through the municipal bodies.
The additional district magistrate (Finance/Revenue) KK Mishra told The Pioneer that the district magistrate (DM) Sonika has issued orders to the officials of several departments to ensure people in need get necessary help like warm clothes or firewood for bonfire as per the requirement, to survive the winters.
The ADM said that officials are also looking for available spaces that can be used as night shelters for the homeless during winter. The district administration gets at least 50 calls daily from those in need of warm clothes and many local residents also approach to donate warm clothes. He said that to ensure more people can help and contribute, the DM ordered the municipal bodies to play a jingle in their garbage collecting vehicles appealing locals to donate warm clothes for people in need. She has ordered an additional staff member along with municipal vehicles like during door to door garbage collection service to collect warm clothes from those interested to donate, said Mishra.
He said that though people do approach the administration to donate clothes daily, municipal bodies have more reach to locals who are interested in donating warm clothes to poor. He said that the collected clothes are kept in storage units across the district which are later distributed by officials like sub divisional magistrates (SDMs) and Tehsildars in their respective areas as per the need. He said that those who want to donate their warm clothes can also call at a toll free number 18001802525.
