Doon generates 30 tonnes of garbage more on Deepawali
The celebration of Deepawali festival led to an increase of about 30 metric tonnes of garbage in Dehradun which included gift wrappers, empty boxes and other plastic waste besides the waste produced by bursting crackers. As informed by the city head of the garbage collection and transportation, Vidit Nagar, the waste generated this Deepawali contained mostly plastic waste like gift wrapping materials, the boxes of sweets and the remains of crackers.
There is usually more waste generated due to bursting of crackers but this year, the plastic waste including gift wrappers and boxes was more than the remains of firecrackers, said Nagar. According to him, there is not a huge difference in the garbage generated by the people this Deepawali than last year except the decreased waste of exploded crackers this year. He informed that over 300 metric tonnes of garbage were collected the day after Deepawali from the 69 wards which is usually about 270 metric tonnes per day in the city.
Meanwhile, the officials of the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) had also expected the waste generation of the crackers to be less this year. They said that the garbage generation including the various boxes, shopping bags and gift wrappers of papers and plastic definitely increased in all the wards this year but the fireworks waste was comparatively less.
