A young boy from Dehradun, Prithvi Samrat Sengupta, suffering from Down syndrome, represented Uttarakhand in Iceland, winning a bronze medal at the IPF World Open Powerlifting Championship. Informing about this, his mother Niyateey Shah said that 18-year-old Sengupta competed in the 66-kilogramme weight category. He secured a silver medal in squat, a bronze in deadlift and an overall bronze in his category, placing him among the best in the world. At Iceland, he competed against athletes twice his age, becoming the youngest participant in his category and earning the title of ‘Mountain Beast’, she added.
Sengupta’s coach, Aman Rai Vohra said, “This is not just a medal; it is a moment of transformation for the sports community in Uttarakhand. He is only the second person from the State to win a medal at the World Open Powerlifting Championship, with the last victory occurring 15 years ago. Prithvi is a two-time national powerlifting champion who has also won gold medals at the Commonwealth Powerlifting Championship in South Africa and won at the Asian Powerlifting Championships in Kyrgyzstan and Malaysia.”
