The police on Wednesday arrested a robber for a heist in a woman’s house in Dehradun’s Vasant Vihar area in the wee hours of Tuesday. A total of seven cases are registered against the accused identified as Ankit Thakur (29) for theft, robbery and drug abuse. He was released from jail about a week ago and robbed a woman’s house to overcome his money problems as claimed by him, said the Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh.
He said that after the victim filed a complaint that she was robbed at knifepoint, the police started an investigation and checked 250 footage of CCTV cameras installed within a radius of four kilometres around the victim’s house. The footage analysis helped the police to identify the accused Thakur immediately as seven cases were registered against him in various police stations of the district. The police team raided all possible hideouts of the accused but did not find him there. The police found out that he had gone to his uncle’s home in Shastrinagar on October 2 when he was not there.
According to his uncle, Thakur took a shower there, changed his clothes and told about his financial crunch to his cousin while adding he is planning something to tackle it, said Singh. The police finally nabbed him on his way to Tea Estate near Kali Mandir in the wee hours of Wednesday. The police recovered jewellery worth Rs 7.3 lakh besides Rs 30,000 cash. The SSP also announced a reward of Rs 10,000 for the team to nab the accused within 24 hours.
