Dehradun police have arrested a member of an interstate gang Ashish Kumar on charges of selling spurious medicines along with a big haul of spurious medicines from the Sahaspur area on Wednesday. Kumar along with his two other accomplices used to deal in the sale of spurious drugs that the police suspect to be worth crores of rupees, said the senior superintendent of police Daleep Singh Kunwar.
He said that the joint team of police and health department raided a godown located in the street of Shankarpur temple on Tuesday after getting information from informers regarding two men involved in the packaging and sale of spurious medicine in the Shankarpur area of Selaqui as several pharmaceutical companies are located there. He said that the teams found about four tonnes of medicine-related material like powder of scrapped medicines rejected by pharmaceutical companies and shells of capsules which they used to fill them and allegedly sold further to sell it along with genuine medicines. He said that the medicinal powder recovered from the godown is used in the manufacturing of medicines for diseases like tuberculosis, fever and heart diseases among others as per the drug inspector.
The department concerned has taken samples to ascertain their use, quality and composition, added SSP. He said that the powder is collected from companies that appear to be a scrap of medicines manufactured in their respective manufacturing units as informed by the arrested accused. The companies usually neutralise such scrap to avoid their misuse but this powder does not seem to be neutralised as per the drug inspector but it will be ascertained only after its chemical analysis, said Kunwar. He said that the police are probing the matter and are working to nab the two absconding accused.
