The state govt had claimed that it would ensure smooth roads

Notwithstanding the state government’s claim that a campaign to make the roads of Uttarakhand free from potholes after the end of monsoon season, the people of the state continue to suffer from damaged roads. In Dehradun city, the provisional state capital, the condition of internal roads continues to remain pathetic.

Important roads such as D L Road, Cement Road, Old Survey Road and others are ridden with potholes. People of the city are unhappy with the government for the inconvenience caused by these potholes. They point out that the potholes and damaged roads of the city are the root cause of problems like traffic jams and accidents.

Mohan Singh, a resident of D L Road said that the government has started the construction for underground pipelines and it is not completed yet and due to this there is constant traffic. He added that several incidents have happened due to this and the situation becomes worse if it rains. Sewer water is on the road and it is difficult to see the road and potholes causing accidents.

Rahul Jain who works in a private office, said, “In Dehradun, very few roads are left on which we can travel smoothly. Otherwise there are potholes present on every step. He questioned that roads are mended overnight for a VIP’s one day visit but what about the people living in Doon who have to reach their destination using these routes. Looking at the basic needs of the citizens should be the topmost priority of the government.

Seema Negi, a shopkeeper, said, “There is some or the other construction work going on the roads of Dehradun which is never completed. If the complaint is done, the potholes are covered with bricks or cement temporarily and roads are in previous conditions in a week or two.” She opined that the government should start the construction and finish it in one go rather than making a road first and then breaking it again to insert a downpipe.
