Dr Sayana to focus on improving facilities in Srinagar medical college

The newly appointed principal of the Government Medical College in Srinagar, Dr Ashutosh Sayana has said that his priority is to provide best facilities to the patients of the mountainous districts of Pauri, Chamoli, Tehri and Rudraprayag in Srinagar.  He told The Pioneer that increasing facilities in Srinagar medical college will result in reduction in referrals of patients of mountainous districts of Garhwal to Dehradun.

 Sayana said the emergency wing of the Srinagar medical college hospital will be strengthened, which will help the trauma and other patients. The new principal said that it would be his endeavour to provide best teaching and training facilities in the medical college. He said that efforts will also be made to increase the number of post graduate seats in the medical college especially in surgery, medicine, paediatrics and gynaecology streams. This will help in solving the problem of shortage of specialist doctors in the mountainous areas of the State. Dr Sayana said that he has taken a target to increase the number of PG seats in the college from existing 32 to 100.  

 He added that the medical college will strive to undertake research in the diseases prevalent in the mountainous areas of the State.  It is pertinent to mention here that the post of principal of Government Medical College, Srinagar was vacant since February 4 this year when Dr CMS Rawat resigned from the post. The government has now appointed Dr Sayana on the post who also is the director of the Medical Education department of the State.
