With October being observed as the breast cancer awareness month across the world, Sanjay Orthopaedic, Spine and Maternity Centre hosted a webinar to raise collective awareness on this disease on Saturday in which over 55 medical experts participated.
Speaking at the webinar, gynaecologist and obstetrician Dr Sujata Sanjay said that the number of such patients has been surging alarmingly with about 30,000 women dying every year in India from it. She said that contrary to the general assumption that the breast cancer is incurable, it is quite curable if detected in time. She also dwelt on the symptoms and four stages of the disease and said that if it is detected in its first stage the possibility of recovery is nearly 80 per cent. “Breast cancer is easy to detect and the women themselves can detect it. The symptoms include lumps in the breast, pain in the breast and blood or fluid oozing from nipples.
Although not every lump in the breast is cancerous, it is important to get it checked so that it does not assume the form of cancer in future,” Dr Sujata said and added that to keep breast cancer away, the women should keep their body weight under control, should not conceive at older age and should breastfeed their children for at least six months.
Speaking about what causes breast cancer, she said that the cause may be genetic but that is found in just five to ten per cent of women. She cautioned against taking high-cholesterol fast foods and red meats, in particular.
