Earth Day celebrated at FRI

The Earth Day was celebrated at the Forest Research Institute (FRI) here on Friday with Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE) director general Arun Singh Rawat as the chief guest.

Speaking on the occasion the FRI director Renu Singh stated that Earth Day reminds us of our responsibilities to work towards saving our planet as it acts as a pointer towards ecological issues. Earth Day is an alarm which apprises society of global warming. The temperature rise has led to substantial climatic changes and global disasters. The earth is suffering due to many issues like pollution, global warming and deforestation. This day enables people to understand these problems and motivates them to protect the earth from further harm and danger, she said.

The ICFRE DG stated that the official theme for 2022 is ‘Invest in Our Plant’ and features five primary programmes- The Great Global Cleanup, Sustainable Fashion, Climate and Environmental Literacy, Canopy Project, Food and Environment, and the Global Earth Challenge. He said that the main problem is garbage disposal and environment cleanup. He also emphasised on the use of natural fibre for clothing as synthetic clothing also pollutes the environment. He said that climate and environment  education should be imparted with strong civic education so people can understand the human influence on climate and climate influence on humans. He also emphasised on planting more trees across the globe that can provide healthy environment.

Expressing his views, ICAR-NDRI principal scientist Anurag Saxena said that everybody wants to live in a safe world but the world is in danger because pollution remains a massive challenge as pollutants, chemicals, domestic and industrial waste is being generated on a large scale. He also discussed about green revolution and its impact as most area was brought under agriculture at the cost of forest area and for increasing crop productivity indiscriminate use of fertilizers and pesticides was done which have detrimental effect on human health. He also told the gathering about various approaches to reduce carbonemission.
