With the political parties rolling up their sleeves for the upcoming general elections, the Election Commission has come up with a stern directive on the use of children in any kind of electioneering. In a directive issued, the EC has asked the parties to refrain from using children in any election-related activities like distribution of posters/pamphlets and in sloganeering and in case a party or a candidate is found using children in election-related works in violation of this directive legal actions would be taken against them under the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act 1986.
However, if a child, accompanied by his parent or guardian, is found in the proximity of a leader it would not be construed as a violation of the directive, the directive clarified.
