Education department revokes affiliation of Sun Valley school

Saturday, 15 JUNE 2024 | PNS | DEHRADUN

The Education department has revoked the affiliation of Sun Valley School for failing to enroll students under the Right to Education (RTE) Act and for not proving its minority status to the department. Providing this information, Dehradun Chief Education Officer (CEO) Pradeep Rawat informed that in 2023, an average of 25 students were listed for enrollment in Sun Valley School under the RTE Act. However, the parents of these 25 students approached the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) and reported that the school had not enrolled their children as required under the RTE Act. In light of this, the commission called for a meeting with officials from the Education department and Sun Valley School, he added.

He further informed that the school in the meeting asserted that they held minority status, thus did not have the authority to enroll students under the RTE act. However, the school failed to provide documentation supporting their minority status. Rawat stated that despite several warnings from Sun Valley School officials regarding enrolling students under the RTE Act, they disregarded these warnings. Following numerous warnings over the course of almost a year, the education department has recently opted to cancel the school’s affiliation. Consequently, the process of withdrawing recognition has commenced, he added.

He further informed that as part of this process, a letter to revoke the affiliation was sent to the Director of Elementary Education (DEE), who has recently approved the revocation of the school’s affiliation. Consequently, the education department has revoked the affiliation of Sun Valley School due to its failure to enroll students under RTE. Rawat emphasised that currently, approximately 2000 students are studying there. In view of the students’ career prospects, the department has identified 19 private schools in Dehradun for their enrollment in the 2025-2026 session, he said.
