Eighth edition of UPES Shaheed Memorial to commence on Dec 28

The University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES) will commence the eighth edition of its annual event Shaheed memorial cricket tournament along with the initiative Naman from December 28 to pay homage to the martyrs of Uttarakhand. This will be a 10-day event that will end on January 18. The vice-chancellor of UPES, Sunil Rai informed that the university chooses a family of a martyr every year to provide succour by raising funds. “We have received many names of the families of the martyrs through various sources that need the financial support but we have not chosen anyone yet. We will select the family of one of the non-commissioned martyrs this year but the screening process is still on and will be completed by this weekend,” stated Rai. He said that a total of 18 teams from government departments and Public Sector Undertakings will participate this year. He added that UPES will help the selected family in other aspects too like employment and education of children.
Besides this, the VC informed that the university will also start a School of Life programme for students to promote sports culture among them as per the new national education policy (NEP) 2020. According to him, every student will have to participate in a sport like running, badminton, judo, taekwondo or any adventure sports under this programme to get a degree from the university. A sports infrastructure facility is already being built with a budget of about Rs three crore for the students which will be ready in six months, added Rai.
