Election Commission announces dates of Kedarnath bypoll

The voting for the Kedarnath Assembly by-election will be held on November 20. The Election Commission announced the dates of the crucial bypoll in Uttarakhand on Tuesday.

 The filing of nomination papers for the by-election will start on October 22 with the election commission notification. The last date of filing of nomination papers is October 29 and the scrutiny of the nomination papers will be done on October 30. The last date for withdrawal of the nomination papers is November 4. The voting will be held on November 20 and the counting of votes will be done on November 23.

 With the EC announcing the dates of the bypoll the model code of conduct (MCC) has come into force in Rudraprayag district. The additional chief electoral officer (ACEO) of Uttarakhand, Vijay Kumar Jogdande said that the EC has set up 173 polling stations in Kedarnath. He informed that in 166 polling stations, the polling parties will depart one day before the polls while in seven polling stations the parties will depart two days before the polls. He said that there are 90,540 voters in the constituency (45,775 female and 44,765 male voters). The ACEO said that there are 1,090 Divyang voters and 641 voters older than 85 years . The constituency also has 2,949 service voters. 

He further informed that the entire constituency has been divided into 27 sectors and two zones. The commission will deploy ten static surveillance teams, eight flying squads and two video surveillance teams in the constituency. The ACEO informed that the Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machines will be used in Kedarnath by- election in all the polling stations. The EC will set up one Divyang, one women and one youth booth in the constituency. The ACEO said that snowfall usually occurs in some areas of Kedarnath in the month of December but the commission will take necessary measures to safeguard the polling parties in the eventuality of snowfall.
