In an attempt to put pressure on the State government to accept the demand of restoration of the old pension scheme (OPS), the National Movement for Old Pension Scheme (NMOPS) has given a call for Marches in all district headquarters of the State on Sunday. In Dehradun the March would commence from parade ground at 10 am and end at the martyrs memorial located in the district collectorate.
The president of Uttarakhand chapter of NMOPS, Jeetmani Painyuli said there is a sense of excitement in the employees and they would join the March in big numbers. He expressed confidence that the March would prove to be a milestone in the movement for the restoration of OPS. The office bearers of the NMOPS are meeting different employee organisations in the last few days in an attempt to make the March a success.
Painyuli said that the New Pension scheme (NPS) is exploitation of the employees and only the OPS would provide social security to them.
The New Pension Scheme (NPS) was started in the year 2004 by the Manmohan Singh government to reduce the burden of pension on the State exchequer. Over the years the employees found the NPS non lucrative and are demanding the restoration of OPS in which the retiring employee gets 50 per cent of his last drawn salary as pension. In the OPS the employees also get the benefit of Dearness Allowance (DA), family pension and commutation. Under the pressure of the employee associations, the State governments of Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh have dismantled the NPS and restored the OPS for their employees. It has given hope to more than 90,000 employees in Uttarakhand who are covered under NPS in the State.
