In latest news from Uttarakhand, the noted environmentalist Ajay Rawat said that the dry winter this time might spawn severe water crisis for the people of the lake district in the upcoming summer. While expressing concern over the depleting water level of Naini lake, he said that the Naini lake must be saved by reviving the Sukhtal lake and its catchment areas. He suggested reviving the dying or blocked springs. Further, he urged the authorities to ban construction of housing and multi-story buildings in Nainital. Also, cement concrete road construction must be stopped, he said and added that if these steps are taken in earnest rain water would seep into the ground and flow into the Naini lake. The environmentalist said that seweage water from most of the houses of Nainital goes out of the town and the the sewers overflow during the rainy season. Keeping this in view, Rawat said that the rain water should be chanellised so that it flows into the lake and this would help the lake’s water level rise by 20 per cent. He warned that unless these steps are taken immediately it would be too late to save the famed lake from imminent death.
