In latest Uttarakhand news, the mules and horses being used in transportation activities during the Char Dham Yatra would not be used in the night and they would be allowed to carry the load as per the limits of their carrying capacities. Besides, they would be given rest after they complete one circle a day. An agreement has been reached between those who filed petitions on this matter at the High Court and the State government. The High Court double bench comprising the Chief Justice Vipin Sanghi and Justice Rakesh Thapliyal heard the public interest litigation on the unabated death of horses/mules during the annual pilgrimage to the four shrines and then asked the State government and the petitioner to sign agreement paper on the matter

Notably, animal welfare activists Gauri Maulekhi and Ajay Gautam filed the petition, alleging that so far about 600 equines have died since the Char Dham Yatra started this year.      Besides, the petitioners alleged that their carcasses are being dumped in the rivers, giving a toss to the rules, adding that these acts might unleash an epidemic in the entire region.

During the hearing, the State secretary, animal husbandry department and Rudraprayag district magistrate were present as representatives of the administration.
